An open letter to all in education

We are currently living in uncertain times. The scale and severity of the Coronavirus pandemic has taken most of the country by surprise. As government, businesses and families scramble to make sense of it and begin planning the next few weeks and months, the delivery of education to the young of this country is going to play a vital role.

As well as having to help support their own families (be it elderly parents or young children), those in education are being asked to make new decisions, adapt existing policies and simply do what they can to help. As such, both the physical and mental burden being placed on you has increased.

As no existing playbook exists, quick decisions are having to be made based on best-guesses, hunches and hope. Do not expect to get every one of these right. Be kind to yourself when things do sometimes go a bit wrong.

Distance learning is not easy. Juggling work and home-life isn’t easy. Motivating disengaged students when you are not in the same room as them isn’t easy. But it is worth it. We will be releasing many more free resources that we hope will help you with your Herculean task..

Exams may have been cancelled and schools are shut. But learning never stops. Looking after each other as a society becomes essential now. Expectations of what can be achieved might need to be tweaked. But if the intention of looking after, supporting, teaching and nurturing our students is there, then we won’t go too far wrong.

When this is all over, society will owe you a further debt of gratitude on top of the massive one it already owes you. Thank you for all your hard work.  If there is anything we can do to help please let us know how,
